3. First-time setup, in order

Part 03

On a fresh installation the order matters — several steps cannot be completed until an earlier one is done. Work down this list once and the platform is usable.

  1. Entitlements first

    Open Entitlements and set the plan tier and limits, then enable the products your organisation has bought. Until at least one product is enabled, nobody can sign in to anything and the page will read No products configured. Part 07.

  2. Mail second

    Configure SMTP on the Mail page and send yourself a test. Do this before creating users: without mail, no temporary password, invitation or reset can be delivered, and every account you create will need its password read out by hand. Part 11.

  3. Storage Access third

    Under Products → QuantaDrive → Storage Access, point QuantaDrive at a bucket and prefix. Until this exists, the workspace-creation wizard offers an empty bucket list and no user can create a workspace. Do the same for QuantaGrid if you use it. Part 13.

  4. Decide the sign-in method fourth

    On Product Login, keep local passwords or configure your identity provider. Change it now rather than after people have accounts and habits. Test in a private browser window before signing out. Part 04.

  5. Create groups fifth

    Make the groups that mirror your teams before you make users, so you can drop each new account straight into one. Part 06.

  6. Create users sixth

    Create accounts, or import them from a directory. Part 05.

  7. Grant each user a product

    Back on Entitlements, grant per user. Skipping this is the single most common cause of a new account that cannot sign in.

  8. Set the security policy

    Session lifetimes, password rules and rate limits on Session Policy. Part 08.

  9. Optional extras

    Enable the Box connector (Part 16), tune preview limits (Part 14), and check Performance & Limits only if you have a reason (Part 12).

  10. Verify end to end

    Create one test user, grant it QuantaDrive, sign in as that user in a private window, create a workspace, upload a file, share it, and delete the test account. This exercises every step above in about five minutes.

Why this order

Entitlements gate everything; mail makes account creation self-service; storage makes workspaces possible; the sign-in method is disruptive to change later; and groups before users saves re-visiting every account.
